Business Summit for Education Reform

The Greater Des Moines Partnership in conjunction with Iowa Chamber Alliance, ABI, and the Iowa Business Council held an inaugural Business Summit for Education Reform. The purpose of the Summit was to create a strong and united business voice from across the State to take a leadership role in advocating for transformative reform in education this legislative session. The Summit featured national and local experts who have successfully created business coalitions that are achieving results through improved education systems. Youth Leadership Initiative (YLI)

Mission
Youth Leadership Initiative (YLI) introduces, develops, and fosters leadership skills among high school sophomores and juniors in the Greater Des Moines region through experiential mentoring and leadership opportunities that enhance self-esteem and encourage involvement in all levels of community life. YLI fact sheet.

Vision
Inspiring participants to impact their community through networking, community engagement, and continuous leadership development; both personally and professionally. To connect young adults to organizations in the Greater Des Moines Region where they can seek out volunteer opportunities and engage with local leadership.

Values
The YLI program values:

  • EMPOWERING youth to connect, participate in change, and create their ideal community.
  • ENCOURAGING youth to become active participants in their community.
  • ENGAGING youth in opportunities to invest their futures in the Greater Des Moines area.

Candidates for the program should:

  1. Be entering their sophomore or junior year of high school (2017-2018).
  2. Have an interest in developing their leadership skills.
  3. Have a desire to learn more about the Greater Des Moines community.

History
YLI started as a project of the Greater Des Moines Leadership Institute. Since its inception 420 students have successfully graduated from this program. Beginning on the fall of 2011 YLI became a program of the Greater Des Moines Partnership under its Regional Workforce Development and Education pillar of work.
