“RSS” is an acronymn that means “Rich Site Summary” or “Real Simple Syndication.” Essentially, RSS allows you to get notified when new
content is posted to your favorite websites and blogs without
having to sign up for site notifications from every site. There are two parts to RSS: the “feed” or notification that comes from the website you’re viewing, and a “feed reader” that you use
to manage and read all your selected feeds. This helps you keep up to date with all your favorite websites without having to surf around to them
individually. It also safeguards you from having to give out your email address, which in turn helps reduce the amount of
spam, viruses, adware and spyware that can harm your computer.
The Feed
More and more, sites that update their content frequently are establishing RSS Feeds to notify their site visitors when new content is available.
The “feed” is actually an .xml file which, when
viewed through the filter of your feed reader, gives you the new content in an easy-to-read format. The feed will either give you a headline and
summary with a click-through link that takes you to the
website to read the full article, or it will give you the full article – depending on what the feed publisher has elected to publish. When you
find a site you will visit frequently, you can subscribe to their feed to find out when new content is posted to that site.
The Feed Reader
Just as you would use a web browser to look at your favorite blogs and websites (instead of reading the source code), you use feed reader software to read your feeds.
You can use a free stand-alone reader like Bloglines or GreatNews, or you can use
built-in RSS readers in popular browsers like Internet Explorer and Firefox. Whichever you use, you will find simple tools that let you organize
your feeds, select whether you want to view excerpts or full articles from each feed, and unsubscribe to those that no longer interest you.
