Each year the Golden Circle Games give Greater Des Moines area businesses the opportunity
to team build in a softly competitive atmosphere.
“It’s a chance to have fun and network with other members of the business community at the
same time,” said Alan Graham, chair of the games and Assistant Director of the Principal
Financial Group.
The teams will compete in a variety of games, ranging from boccie ball and Frisbee golf to
the more unusual games like the armchair quarterback and the hula-hoop relay. There are also
crazy games like caterpillar, where the teams line up with beach balls between them, carrying
a pole above them, as they maneuver through a course.
“It’s a good way for companies to get employees out doing something fun together,” said
Sharon Keeling, Community Involvement Manager at the Partnership.
The Midway is a new location for the games so not all of last year’s games will be returning.
In addition to the change in location, there will only be one entrance to the games this
year, the University Avenue entrance. The Grand Avenue entrance to the Fairgrounds is
closed for construction until August.
The Golden Circle Games began 16 years ago with only four businesses participating.
Last year there were 500 teams from businesses throughout the Greater Des Moines area.
This year they have approximately 500 teams signed up and unfortunately they are not
accepting any more teams.
Although you can no longer participate, spectators are welcome. The event is expected to
draw a crowd of five to six thousand people. The cost is $15 per person and that includes
a meal ticket and unlimited soft drinks.
