Last Chance for the Downtown Farmers' Market - This Saturday!
Posted: Wednesday, October 26, 2011
Celebrate the final Downtown Farmers’ Market of the regular season in the Court District this Saturday, Oct. 29. The fun starts at 7 a.m. and continues through noon. Kids are invited to dress up in their Halloween costumes for trick-or-treating with the vendors and create spooky edible crafts at the Pioneer Hi-Bred “Earn Your PhB” booth. Dogs in costume are welcome too.
With nearly 200 vendors, the Downtown Farmers’ Market will offer a variety of fall-season fresh fruit and vegetables. Shoppers will find apples, pears, beets, turnips, pumpkins, gourds, shallots, carrots, arugula & mixed salad greens, garlic, potatoes, a variety of squash, green beans, tomatoes, and peppers. Due to the late frost and use of high tunnels, farmers have been able to extend their growing season. Many additional market favorites such as locally raised meats, artisan cheeses, delicious breads and pies, honey, jam, and several Iowa made wine varieties will be also available.
In addition to the delicious farm fresh food and prepared foods, The Downtown Farmers’ Market is the best place to find perfect fall décor – Iowa-grown pumpkins, beautiful decorative Indian corn, unique gourds, colorful fall mums and dried flowers, as well as unique autumn arts and crafts.
“It’s the last Saturday of the season and we welcome everyone to come down to stock up for the winter,” says Kelly Foss, Downtown Farmers’ Market director. “It’s been a wonderful season and on behalf of the Downtown Farmers’ Market vendors and staff, I would like to thank our community for supporting the Market.”
While this is the last Downtown Farmers’ Market of the regular season on Court Avenue, the Winter Market will return Nov. 18 & 19 and Dec. 16 & 17, indoors at Capital Square and outdoors at Nollen Plaza, 400 Locust Street in Downtown Des Moines.
