New GetActiveDSM Mobile Web Debuts at Race for the Cure

The Greater Des Moines Partnership just announced a new mobile web site to track local fitness events, and participants in Iowa’s Komen Race for the Cure will be the first to take it for a test-drive. GetActiveDSM.com will offer an interactive calendar of central Iowa’s top walk, run and bike events in 2012 — including options to set reminders, connect with friends at events, earn badges and more.

“Greater Des Moines has more than 40 high-profile active events each year, but there’s no single resource to keep track of them,” says Meg Fitz, the Greater Des Moines Partnership’s Vice President of Regional Business Development. “GetActiveDSM.com will not only fill that need, it also provides a fun way for the community to get involved and stay connected.”

According to Fitz, the mobile web site aligns with the Partnership’s efforts to promote health and wellness and enhance quality of life. “This is a tool for businesses and individuals alike to get more active, support great causes and enjoy a sense of accomplishment,” she adds. “From healthier workplaces to supporting the typically charitable organizations that put these events together, everyone wins.”

The site is officially set to launch Jan. 1, but the Iowa Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure agreed to allow preliminary testing at the October race. Users will get a sneak peek at how the site works, while helping the Partnership refine it for the full release.

When complete, the site will serve as a one-stop reference with an event calendar, race maps, and the ability to “check in” and find others at an event — as well as the opportunity to compete with others to earn badges for participation.

The Partnership is working with local interactive developer Shift to create this site, which will work with any smartphone, including Droid, BlackBerry and iPhone.  Watch for more details at www.GetActiveDSM.com.
