Message from the Partnership Chair

The Partnership is fortunate to have a long history of talented and experienced CEOs overseeing Central Iowa’s economic development mission. The CEO plays a significant role in our community, requiring leadership, vision and strong management skills. That is why, following Martha’s recent announcement of her retirement plans, the Partnership’s Executive Committee directed me to form a search committee and oversee the selection process to fill the position by year’s end. The committee has now approved the process and position profile to share with interested candidates. I see this search as my greatest responsibility as your Chair. 

Greater Des Moines is currently the envy of the Chamber and economic development industries thanks to our strong business community, our philanthropic culture and our recent recognitions as the “best place” for business, careers, families, and most recently for young professionals. There will be significant professional interest in this position. While that will benefit the search process, it will also take time. I am grateful to Martha for sharing her plans well in advance of her retirement, allowing us both time and opportunity to make the best hire possible. With the launch of our Capital Crossroads strategic plan, emerging business and governmental issues, growing regional cooperation, a shift in the region’s workforce needs and the continuing economic recovery, a smooth leadership transition of leadership is crucial. 

I am leading an open process that includes:

• Input to the search criteria and process by a cross section of the community: Partnership investors; Affiliate Chambers and their members; public sector leaders; non-profit and education sectors; and staff
• The assistance of an executive search firm, Waverly Partners,  specializing in economic development organizations and Chambers of Commerce to welcome both local and external candidates -- the firm is a preferred provider of the American Chamber of Commerce Executives, the industry professional association of which the Partnership is a member
