When it’s time to get out of the stands and into the game, Greater Des Moines offers a
recreation league or club at just the right skill and competition level. We start with the big four of rec leagues: soccer, bowling, golf and softball.
Mix in volleyball, basketball, hockey, figure skating, cycling, gymnastics, darts, pool, martial arts and much, much more. Greater Des Moines even
offers some unexpected sports treasures like rugby, rowing on the Des Moines River and the thundering combination of horse, rider and mallet known as
polo. The City of Des Moines has an extensive list of leagues, as does
West Des Moines. Other area communities have
leagues, too - start with our list of area City Halls to find the league closest
to you.
As for the kids, well, power up the camcorder. Greater Des Moines has acres of fields, rinks, courts and legions of adult volunteers who stress youth league participation and sportsmanship more than wins and losses. (still, have the camera ready to capture Janie's ridiculously difficult, gravity-defying, 360-spinorama, game-winning header goal for ESPN.) Athletics have always gone with academics in Iowa, so Greater Des Moines schools also offer students an array of sports. |
