While other cities abandon their downtown cores, we're investing in ours through renewal projects that expand business and attractions downtown. These projects include Gray's Lake, the Iowa Events Center, Science Center of Iowa and Blank IMAX theatre, Central Library, John and Mary Pappajohn Higher Education Center, Principal Riverwalk and the Meredith Trail, among others. The approach has attracted and retained industry titans like EMC Insurance Company, Meredith Corporation, Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc., Allied Insurance, Principal Financial Group, Wells Fargo Financial and Wellmark.
The downtown community includes a workforce of nearly 77,000 people, connected by almost four miles of enclosed, climate-controlled skywalks. State regulators and policy makers, accounting firms, law firms, banks and the area's largest post office are also at the city's center. Downtown housing is taking off, with many more lofts and condos in the works.
Interstates 35, 235 and 80 make it easy for Greater Des Moines' workers to get downtown. Plus, the Des Moines International Airport is located just 10 minutes away from the heart of the city. More than 8,000 covered parking spaces are connected to the skywalk system that links downtown office towers.
